Jay,
I've got several books on this stuff from a previous career. I can discuss with you on the phone if you like. I doubt you'll get some of these engine builders to disclose what they actually do. They would be giving up trade secrets so to speak. Maybe I'm wrong. Call Jim, he may tell you. I...

I have two comments:

1. I don't think statically balancing the crank would be satisfactory. Although some may prove otherwised based on it's simplicity. Measuring the geometry against a known "balanced" crank would not be accurate enough to reproduce a balanced second. We're talking frac...

Nope, the new crank weighed less than the old crank and the other components (counter balance, piston, etc) where never adjusted. Thier solution was to simply add weight to the crank and they did it in a single spot.

Not sure what your getting at. What's wrong with adding weight to the c...

I had to step back and re-evaluate. I'm a racer. I bought a Cannondale because It was what I was looking for in a quad and the novelty of owning something made in the "USA" seemed "cool", but I'm still a racer. For the time being, I'm pro Cannondale, ATK or whatever you want to call my latest "black...

Jay,
I agree with Dustin's mention of semantics. Balance the crank, then balance or maybe a better word would be "optimize" the engine with respect to vibration. These are two separate procedures, although the first procedure must be done to yield the best results from the second procedure. Rem...

You hit the nail on the head Ben, with respect to crank failure. It's not my place to disclose what Jim (Big Winky) has discovered. If you want to know the details, call him and maybe he'll tell you. There are several highly respected engine builders out there, I think one of them owns this site, bu...
