My next step would be to put the throttle body aside and crank it with everything hooked up except the coil and look at the spray from the injectors to see if there is even fog between the two with a bright flashlight pointed down there. If that looked ok I would try a different coil and then a fuel...

I would say chances are pretty high that will fail the next time you torque the head down... if it keeps on tightening a turn or two more than the others that is a sign that the threads are coming out with it and it will stop when that shoulder contacts the head. If I remember right one of the biggest problems with them was that the oil hole for the big end rod bearing was offset in the worst way by ending up right at the edge of where the bearing roller ran so about time it was broke in good or sooner one would catch in there and wipe out the rod and pin. The popping can come from a leak at the header also... but barring that I would turn up the offset in increments of .1 until the popping stopped and you will have to likely turn the idle down too as this would make it richer at idle. And depending on where your flow rate is now maybe a lower number ...
