Gus I would say no motor oil is not acceptable anymore.Real filter oil will catch alot more than motor oil.Mineral oil works just fine for cleaning a filter.

Please do not use engine oil for a filter oil. C27 is definitely right, the filter oils are way more tacky and catch so much more debris and dust.

Wash out with varsol or mineral spirits then with soap and water, dry, then oil with air filter oil. When I oil I put it in a ziploc and dribble it on then work it in keep adding oil until it is uniformly coated but do not saturate it.Motor oil will not catch dust and will run off in the tray. Make sure to use grease around the base of the filter I use Bel Ray waterproof and make sure that it is seated properly they sometimes try to seat crooked.
