There were some short snout cranks. Those you must use the narrower seal. 5 mm I believe. I use the narrow seal for all cases to get more contact since yes if using the wider newer seal the outside lip will be right on the taper there is two lips though so its not a real issue. In both styles you have to use the right stator spacer also. So seal isn't crushed against crank or out too far. Using the narrow seal and a O-ring to keep it correctly positioned works well.
