If your shifter end has worn and it now sticks forward at a angle rather than at a 90 you can cut a piece out of some thin guage metal and stick it in there to prevent this and straighten it out also.

I had some pieces left over from those stainless steel rocker panels guard that go on a truck they have a 3m sticky backing also but that wouldnt be necessary since the spring pressure hold this in.
