A 300ex with a nice came and a high compression piston will be a good start. To make the 300 really competetive upgrade the suspension. My daughter races a 300 ex that has aftermarket shocks all around and it is a completely differnt bike compared to stock. Right now she has a .20 over piston with 10.5:1 piston that does pretty good on the power end. She had a 330 kit that she blew up that would outrun a stock 400 ex!!! This summer we are going back to the 330 kit just before she turns 16 and start to run GNCC. Also one thing you might want to add since your son is so tall is a 2+ steering stem to give him some room to move around.d
