You can leave the tranny alone, but head, piston, sleeve, cartridge plate all need to come off to replace the crank.

Was there metal in your filter recently? Is this the original motor in your quad?Early 02's and FX's had crankmainbearing problems the later motors had a bigger bearing to fix it.You can identify the early motor by aliminum valvecover, machined crank carillo rod,
and cable clutch.

it has hyd clutch, there is 05/02 on the crank, and a bronze colored rod.

Then you have the later motor. There was talk of some misaligned crankplate holes, contamination(metal going through it)or just fatigue from unbalanced crank.Crank mainbearing failure is fairly rare I would just try to eliminate any contamination sources either get crank balanced or buy new one and put it back together.I have been using the ballbearing mainbearings rather than stock but I didnt have enough time on motor to be able to recommend them. How did your oil and filter look?

the oil and filter had a small amount of metal flakes, nothing to bad. about the same amount as the previous oil change. the good thing is that only the inside of the bearing started to loosen up so there was no other damage, i did order ball bearings from diamond racing.

The cartridge plate missalignment problem was found and fixed at the factory in 7/02. Given your build date and the fact that the bearing is worn, I'd replace the cartridge plate while you have it apart.
