i have a canon that my uncle gave me. he buys the newest baddest camera every 6 months becuase he is a photographer. it takes really good pictures but it hates focusing on closeups

If it's an SLR, that would probably be a lense selection issue.

Yep, thats a good camera. But I don't think the lense is setup for close macro work. Possibly only a 2-3' focusing range. The other issue is that is becomes a wide angle lense when brought in that far. It's good for larger objects at closer range, but distorts small objects when you get close. But the quality of the typical shots should be excellent!
