How do i remove the (thing?) next to the brake rotor? also what are some steps to follow?

Remove the plastic cover,you will see three allen nuts,loosen them and It will unscrew.Its called a lock nut.Also pay attention to the little half round shims in there,I learned the hard way.

are you taking it out?
first take the circle clip out under the sprocket hub.... then bang it off(rubber mallet)...take your caliper and rotor off...then bang the axle out......

also i still cant unscrew the lock nut.

with something pointy ..a small screw driver...i used a nail...lol...is the preload nut stuck....try some oil and a LITTLE heat...remember that it is alum...

OK do you see the hole just in sight on the left side of the axle nut? You use a phillips head screw driver type shafted tool to put in that hole to turn it like a big lever. BUT first, you have to loosen the three allen head screws to take the tension off of the nut.
