Anyone using a laptop without serial port?

#1 Post by BM426Racer »

I bought a new laptop from gateway. To my suprise it didn't come with a serial port. I found a USB to seial port adapter. Installed the software, check port indentification and such and now im getting a 125 code from my d&m. Anybody got anything on this? If not looks like im gonna have to go to gateway and get the serial port card to install.

the adapter isnt working. the 125 code means it isnt connecting to either the ECU or the laptop

i have the belkins one. it says its in com4 in the device manager so i switched my d&m to com4. went through the trouble shooting in windows and everything seems to be working. the link light on the adapter in one and the light on the com cable is also on. tried hitting the start button and pluging the cable in and unpluging it and still nothing. guess ill try again tomorrow.

Canniboomer has a Belkin adapter and his doesn't work either! Maybe there is something wrong at Belkin.

Just in case, make sure the key is in the "ON" position.

There was a thread several months back regarding this topic. Apparently, many of the USB to serial adpaters have baud rates that are not compatible with the D&M cable. Some of the adapters work and some will not. It's too late at night for me but someone should find that old thread and paste a link as I remember it listed a couple of adapters that were tested to work OK.

I HAD the Belking 109 too, and took it back to Office Depot after many attempts to make it work and it wouldn't. Scooter gave me a link to a company that sells one that will work. I don't have the address right here, but the place is called RAM ELECTRONICS. I haven't ordered one yet, but need to.
