Non Factory Update List . Retitled- Stage 2 updates

#1 Post by wistech »

I get questions all the time about what are the vital non factory updates to get the most out of the Cannondale /ATK system. So I thought Id throw a list together of what I consider vital and nonvital updates . Feel free to add any info you have.

Vital updates
1 Rod bearing -
2 Decompression mechanism inspection, tightening
3 Oil dipstick removal -
4 Sump magnets/paper oil filter/ or stainless mesh filter with magnets, more magnets
5 Full engine teardown and correct reassembly
6 Replace swingarm pivot with solid or studded one
7 Waterless coolant and or aluminum cam cover
8 Locktite everywhere
9 FX400 flywheel bearing replaced with 03 style
10 Checking / replacing fuel lines
11 Checking for sticking cam buckets
12 Magnets in cyllinder head
13 Checking water pump impellar clearance on aluminum impellars especially.
14 Checking cam chain pivot guide for cracks at the base of the guide
15 Removal of WWE wrist pin and installing good ones. Maybe just toss the whole piston in garbage.
16 Checking JE pistons for cracks. just toss those as well.
17 Pressure test engine for leaks
18 Replacing stator wires with high temp ones and heat shielding
19 make sure crank end play is between .002 and .010
20 replace all solid lobe cams with older ones or have them nitrided
21 remove ecm relay to prevent stalling issues
22 Valve spring shimming and or new valves/springs tighter clearances, checking buckets for sticking. Even new valve springs need checking and shimming.
23 metal water pump impellar mandatory for machines with no cooling fan

Non vital
1 Flywheel hub inspection check for cracks

3 Shift shaft shims to compensate for thicker gasket
4 Engine cover noise supression
5 Wiring harness relay instalation
6 Metal water pump
7 Status lights
8 Headlight bulb reinforcement
9 Higher grade rear shock bolts
10 Reinforce welds and mount on plates in stock exhaust
11 Rubber padding between the engine and skid plate to prevent plate wear

List will grow as they come to mind or added to.

Oil Dipstick removal? Can you explain? Sorry for the ignorance.

Also, are you using the (Parker?) stainless braided/teflon coated fuel lines? If so, where can I get some? 27?

The hole in the frame on both my quads is not centered on the dipstick. When I screw it in to check oil it wipes the stick on the edge of the hole and always give a false reading of 1/3 to 1/2 full . Even if the spare is empty.
Ive been running spiroflex teflon /stainless fuel hose for a couple months and its working good. I was thinking of making up some kits but Im swamped with projects for the next few months.

Update ..been 5 years and no hose deterioration.

******: Sad thing is that you're probably right!!!sad.gif One scary thing about handmade...

Wistech,
If you do offer a kit, please let me know. Otherwise I will do a little research and figure something out myself. P.S. Can you shoot me a pm with your Phone number so that I can call you about that exhaust? Thanx, wanablaze.

This is what you get with empty frame spars. It says 1/3 full. Arg:mad:

One hint. Gotta look in there and I dont ever screw the dipstick in. Just set it in if oil is on tip it is full.

Man, you guys are going to scare perspective buyers off to a jap quad with this list.

I really think we should put classifications on some of this stuff.

Like vital for:

Trail riders
Occasional Racers
Full Racers

According to your vital list, my Speed should be in a junkyard by now. Only thing on the vital list it's had done is paper oil filter, aluminum impellar, and locktite on cartridge plate bolts.

No magnets, no rod bearing, no complete teardown, etc, and it's running fine with 3 years of trail riding.
