When the fuel is flowing right you will just see a stream of fuel going right through the filter. There should be very little if any actually in the filter.

It had a good stream.but must have hit a dry spot. i turned it off and watched the filter. fuel and air both kept flowing backwards.back towards the tank.could have been more air than fuel.

That is very interesting. I have never seen that with mine. When I shut if off, everything just stops, the filter is half full then. But when it is running, it is like c27 says, almost nothing in the filter, it flows through so fast.

Boy that sure sounds like the cap vent is not working. Did you try loosining the cap when it acts up?

No, i didnt loosen it. just took it off and blew through the tube.but i do have a cracked gas cap. someone before me must have over tightened it. would that cause any problems besides a burning crotch from leaking fuel from doing wheelies?..lol

Fuel flowing backwards toward the tank. That sounds like bad venting to me.

You say you have a new fuel pump. Was it acting like this before you replaced the fuel pump? I assume it must have been acting up or you wouldn't have replaced the pump?

You could also be losing power to the pump momentarily. If you have status lights or d&m cable you can watch the light. If it goes off for a instant then that is the issue and usually is bad grounds or even a bad relay.
