The crank needs to be split, inspected, new updated rod bearing installed if still good, pressed back together and balanced.

Most likely you have a magnesium valve cover, in that case it should be inspected for corrosion as well.

Wistech is a great guy around here as well and would be my first choice for crank work as he has a guy who is affordable and does great work in good time.

The crank does not NEED to be balanced unless you have excessive vibration to begin with. While the stock crank is off balance to a degree many times its not enough to cause problems. It would be best to have it balanced but it is not what I would consider as required.

FYI, Wistech does not do cranks. He has someone locally that can do them. Tim (site owner) is by far the best choice for crank work. He is anal about these things and his work is top notch. In fact where do you think the other vendors get their cranks worked on. smile.gif

On thanks for the info. Should I contact Wistech and ask him about having it done? Or just go to Tim? I do appreciate the help and sorry for the questions I just want to make sure I am going about things in the correct manor. These Cannondales are very new to me so I just want to learn.

As site admin I will always suggest (and others should as well) to support the site sponsors FIRST. If you can't get a hold of folks or they do not carry the product you want then by all means others will be around to help you out. But without the site sponsors or the site owner none of us would be on this board today.

So in short, give Tim or a sponsor a call. Then if you are still in need give Wistech a call.

I have always been and will always be a proponent of folks helping each other out. If you are local to someone and they know how to work on these well then yeah, go to them and get help. They may even have a local guy for stuff like cranks. But if you are sending it out, send it to a sponsor. Not only does it help keep them in business it also is safer for you.

How far are you from Waterford PA? That is where Tim is at. Great guy and is always welcoming to folks coming up and learning.

If you go with Tim and he is busy, be prepared to wait for the work to be done as he is very busy. I suggested Wistech (John) as his guy does great work as well and has a good turnout time.

Just a couple of thoughts. I have never considered Brian from Kinney Racing to be in competition with Tim. I always ask that Tim is first choice for crank work because he does this for a living and I want to help him and his family out. That being said when Tim tells me he doesnt have time he has no issue with Brian or anyone else doing work. As far as what can be done both Tim and Brian have done hundreds of crank repairs and both have proven to me to take pride in their perfectionist attitude towards crankshafts. They are both friends of mine , both attended my wedding and respect each other. Some seem to want to find an issue but ask both of them and you will see there is none. Brian is always swamped with work at his shop and does not need or look for Cannondale work. And although Brian can build stroker cranks and replace pins he really doesnt have the setup to do it anywhere as effeciently as Tim which is why he costs much more to to them. That is why he prefers just to do updates which he can get done in a hour and get back to repairing all those grenaded japanese machines . If you have been to his shop you will see mountians of them.

I agree with you in trying to support the site sponsors. I am about 5hrs south east of Waterford PA. So that is a little far me to just visit. laugh.gif

I am guessing the next move would be to remove the crank and make sure it will be okay before I start calling and bugging people. And also that will give me some time to collect more parts.

The rare good crank. I'm not suggesting that you not update the crank but I'll tell you what I went through with my 02 cannibal. I bought it used with no updates and I bought it running. The machine had plenty of hours on it pretty much all the steering components, chain, carrier bearings, everything had wear on it to suggest alot of use.

I fried the one way bearing and that required a complete tear down and after reading what everyone wrote on the forums I decided I had to change out the lower rod bearing. I took it to 2 crank specialists that are not cannondale guys but are well renowned in their profession and both told me there was no reason to split this crank...it came out of a running machine, they checked it on the dial indicator it was within spec, and i had no shavings in my oil changes. I still wouldn't quit, I finally found a 3rd guy who told me the same thing....I explained all the stuff I read about bad cranks and he said this crank has been running for almost 10 years it's obviously a survivor maybe a good crank. He finally agreed to split it and called me to the shop when he did. There was no wear on the pin and the bearing was perfect. We still went ahead and put the Z Bearing in there and now my machine is running excellent.

Mind you I bought a rolling chassis that the rod blasted through the front of a motor on a very low hour machine and also consider you don't ever see cannondales in your local pits so the crank bearing is an issue but are there some good original cranks out there? Is it worth the gamble? Guess it depends on your budget and patience, I had so much down time with updates that I had to get myself a 400ex to hold me over...today my wife uses that quad and ride the dale!
