20" tires tighter trails&tracks $ dunes 14-40, more open trails&tracks 15-40,18"tires as high as possible. On my 495 I run 15-40 and do a mix with it,but mostly drag racing(motard 5th).Animalscannibal runs 14-40 on his 505 mostly drag racing (stock5th)both geared for 500ft drags with 19tires rev limiter right after 500ft.For trails&dunes I run 20s with this gearing(15-40).Both quads run extended swingarms to put the power to the ground.a 15th front sprocket gives you alot of useable combos with the 505.
40tooth rear sprockets (factory OEM talon's) are easy to come by. I run 15-38 and 1st through third go by way to fast. Its also difficult to keep the front end down sometimes with the stock swingarm. Once I hit fourth gear I really gain a lot of ground on most quads. I'm going to gear it for even more topend. I'm going to start with a 35 tooth rear and then try the bike clutch basket if I need more. I'm running 18 inch tires.

You'll also want to be careful running a small rear sprocket, as that would wear the chain slider even quicker.
Also, if you look at the factory race bikes they tend to run the largest front and rear sprocket (even ending up with the same ratio as stock) but the larger front sprocket lets the motor work easier applying the same amount of torque to the rear wheels.
