What should be simple is not working.
I have the axle out of the carrier, only thing on it is the sprocket hub. I believew that I should be able to push the hub towards the center of the axle to expose the clip, remove the clip then push the hub off the splines outward. simple right? wrong, the hub won't go in to free up the clip, I put in a press and tried moving it in, no luck, it's not budging.
Any ideas?

It gets dirt in the area behind the clip and makes life a little difficult. Steve is right.

Give the axle a tap with a hammer (metal) while the pressure is on it. It's like the Beach Boys said, "Good Vibrations!"

I cleaned it out the best I could and then added heat. I couldn't get mine off. But I had a friend with a big press use a pipe against the hub. He had to use heat too.
