Never say never. I just tore a fx400 down with 4 years of hard racing on it. The only problem was the tiny brass cage main bearing which suposedly failed early on on most fx400's years ago. Everything else on this motor is sweet even the aluminum clutch plates and the cartridge plate seal has no chaffing. Ill bet when I bust the crank down the rod will be good too.
Just got my motor buttoned back up today from a 450 kit install and it was fine. Still has original cartridge plate bolts and all. The early ones just seem to be a lot better like they started trying to cut costs later when they started contracting some of the work out instead of doing it in house. My old release was tighter than this newer one.
I ended up taking a wore out 1000 cam and transfered the release over onto my original cam. My lever pin had fell out and wore the hole into an oval. Had been running fine but I am sure it happened 2 years ago at Loretta's GNCC. I couldn't get it fired up and was last off the line. Was fine since but it never truly started right.
Still want an extra 500 exhaust cam though so keep me in mind.
