It may be a stupid question...Can you put a Elka rear shock with remote ressy on backwords??

You won't be able to adjust the rebound very easily.

my ressy can comes off of the header side and I keep burning through the hose. Should the notch on the top of the shock be facing the top or bottom?

Rich,
You should have that shock mounted just like the factory one. If you are sitting on the bike, the reservoir should be on the right hand side. If it is not, just unbolt the top mount and spin the head of the shock 180 degrees with the lower mount still attached. I had the reservoir mounted to my subframe opposite the exhaust.
