While out on my quad on Sunday I went to hop up onto a big stone step.

I got square on with it and hit the throttle to lift the nose onto the top of it. Of course it hesitated a bit just when I didn't want it to and the front wheels ran pretty square into it with a fair 'thump', not bad enough to stop the quad but enough to make me think 'ouch'. I came to ride off and the steering was all floppy.....

Because the tie rods point up towards the steering stem, the impact force pushing the wheels back made them both want to toe out (I want to apply negative offset steering if I can later on) which made the tie rods push the steering stem up hard enough to stretch the top cover of the bottom stem bearing and popped the bearing out through the cover.

Has anyone else had this before?

I think I'll be making one out of thicker material....

Yep, been there done that. Most people use stronger bolts as well. The housing is made of very thin mild steel. Big Winky made a thicker aluminum one that I have heard mixed reviews on. I'll see if I can find a picture.
