Shock valving

Alright, on a quest for a set of used 16" shocks for XC. Now the question...

Finding used 'Dale shocks is quite hard to do. Will the valving be correct or close if I find a set of shocks setup for an EX or an R ? If they are close, which way will they be off - like ... will an EX shock setup for the same weight as a 'Dale shock be stiffer, or softer? The same for the R shocks?

Or... will buying new ones be the only way they work correctly?

Who has interchanged them and with what results?

Thanks for any info.

Edit: I forgot to mention, I will be using these on the Houser +1 arms - so I am guessing I need them a little stiffer than stock width. I appreciate any input - thanks.

I think hannible is looking for some Ohlins, actually.

aroracer has some Elkas but they aren't setup for me at all.

I was on EXriders looking at a couple different sets of PEP that are valved very close to what I'm looking for, but are just for different machines. I was trying to figure out what the difference would be....

Thanks to all answers...

The problem isn't the valving, its the shaft and body lenght that will be wrong.

What's wrong about them? A friend of mine wanted to see if there was any difference so we put them side by side before I ever installed my Blaze's. Both were dual rate 16" but his were for an EX and were Works. They were same in everything I could tell including shaft length unless they were like a mm off.

I don't know the exact dementions but the stroke is wrong. They will work but they won't work correctly

Jeff can you enlighten me as to what 'stroke' is? Please only in terms applicable to ATV's smile.gif

I thought our geometry was almost identical to that of an R or an EX...

Ok,

Honda with compression and rebound for example has 5.25" of stroke
Cannondale with compression and rebound has 4.8" of stroke.

If you put the Honda shocks on a Cannondale, the tierods will hit. The only thing that you can safely do is to get some travel limiters which I believe Elka offers.

hope this helps,
