450 or 460?

#1 Post by RyeGuy »

I am preparing to get my 2002 cannibal rebuilt. I am going to be putting one of the rebuilt stock/suzuki bearing cranks and either a 450 sleeve/piston or a 460 sleeve/piston. Anybody have any reason to or not to go with one or the other?

Thanks!

My 2cents:

Timbo stroker with a stock bore will get you to 450 cc, for about the same money as a 450kit or maybe even a little less than the 450 kit and the cost of z400 bearing a stock crank.

For more power, do the porting.

There are posts somewhere on what you can expect for power gains by doing the different engine mods.

BTW, where in NW Indiana are you located. I race with RX440 in Ottawa IL occassionally. He got a little test ride on my stroker, so he maybe he can give you his opinion on it.

Theres no guarantee your crank is still good. If it is, you can just have a z400 bearing put in it. If it isnt, you will be needing a rebuilt crank. Timbo does that for 375 I believe. He only charges an extra $100 for the stroker. You will need your crank split before you know what it needs.

$350 to get it stroked and the z400 bearing
$125 for a rod if you need it
$375 to get it ported/polished, and the whole intake opened up (throttle body bored out and some stuff to the airbox)
and then something liek $130 for the gasket kit from Brad.

In my case, it was only another 100 bucks. I didnt need the extra power, but I just thought - I like torque so why not. smile.gif

Sorry, I was not detailed enough! The crank had to be cut in order to remove it from engine, so I am pretty sure that eliminates rebuilding the crank.

I am definitely going with a stock crank (new) with the z400 bearing. My question was will the 460 give me much for the extra (about) 100 bucks? Will the 460 put extra stress on the motor? I race harescramble, and am looking mostly for low end, speed is nice, but not as important as power smile.gif

Thanks

For low end the big bore might not be the way to go. The stroker definitly give the biggest gains in torque. The drag racers are doing 3rd and 4th gear starts with them. Thats got to be heck on the clutch pack.

..if u have to buy a new crank i dont have the money for a stroker..then do a 460 kit..i had one with a stock head..ran well..i thought that top end power was about same as stock, but then again i didnt remap...but it had tons of mid..in the right rpm range, with 14/42 gearing with 18's i could pull it up in 5th gear but just pinning it and not poping the clutch...but like i said you had to be in the meat of the power to do it..
..If your on a buget but can do the extra 100 for the 460 do it..
