The problem is the area that the hole is in is right in a squish zone where the cyllinder head is compressing the sleeve into the bore. When under stress the hole will crack open. The whole point of the drilling was to tell the factory workers which way to set the sleeve in the block. They must have had the drill set to go in to far and screwed up a ton of sleeves. Cripes a magic marker would have done the job. Duh.

Is it possible to weld the hole shut? You would think that would give it the stength needed.

Cant weld there. Its a perfectly machined area. Any welding will warp it . You could try some liquid metal or JB weld for support.

Which way do they tend to crack? I was under the impression that they cracked vertically down the sleeve.
