A buddy of mine pulled the motor and took the side cover off. What he found out doesn't speak too well for Mr. Winky. The timing was off apparently causing the piston to hit the valves. My friend corrected the timing and now the motor will turn over, but we did a leakdown test and we could feel air coming out of the intake at TDC. Looks like we've got to tear down the motor and replace the valves.

So, does this officially make you an "engine builder?"

KRMit, look between the rod and crank halfs. If you see brass thrust washers, that motor is GUARANTEED to last about 10 hours
Max. They average around one hour. Then you play He11 trying
to clean your frame spars.
Quote, ????????????????He didn't have a very high opinion of Cannondale reliability and he suggested fixing it and selling it."
This is probably the same advice he gave to guy you bought your
dale from. Also, Winkey was using cheap ball bearings, less than $10.00 each on the left and right crank bearings. (OEM are Roller Bearings).
IMHO, don't just fix his quality issues, have a reputable, experienced person go over this entire engine. Save that piston & sleeve, by not running your engine till after every thing has been gone over. Then ENJOY! Cdales are one of the bestest, funest, beat the snot-out of, and come back for more toys. ever made.:usa :hammer: :usa

So what is it supposed to have instead of brass thrust washers?

It shouldn't have thrust washers there at all. He experimented with the bearings he put in there. They didn't work well at all. We are now putting Z400 bearing in place of the stock bearing.

On the newer cranks he does (winky)or at least the ones I have seen he uses a old style used rod which is narrowed on the big end to make room for the thrust washers the old used rod is then sleeved to fit a Yamaha rod bearing. This leaves you with a smaller dia bearing, pin and race the yamaha bearing is also narrower than stock nobody making 11000 rpm motors is using thrust washers. If it is the first run of his cranks the pin was just welded to cover up the deformities this weld will not hold up when using a needle bearing like all the cranks have.
Z400 bearing is a perfect match for our stock bearings but with a far better design. Please do it or buy a Falicon the amount of small metal fragment from a shot crank is just overwhelming and nobody can get them all out of your frame.Sorry for your bad luck.

If this is what winky did then you may be better off using the old motor. Just fix it if possible.
