overheating problems

#1 Post by guthrie08 »

i was practicing at our local track and my quad overheated and shot coolant everywhere. i went home, rebled the system, and tightened cap down. After taking another short ride my coolant bottle was hot to the touch. If i would of kept riding would it have shot coolant again and do i need to replace my plastic impeller with a aluminum one?

The cap should bleed off at about 17.5psi -- it is supposed to leak after that pressure. Stripped-out impeller is one likely cause, or a badly plugged-up dirty radiator.

radiator is spotless, not clogged at all. should i take the risk of riding it again? if the impeller is stripped out, wouldent that ruin my engine by not allowing any coolant to get to it?

You could always pull the cover & check to see if it is stripped.

No the impellar has lefthand threads so turning it clockwise will remove it.Keep turning then look in the hole to see if it is stripped.

Do you have a hose clamp on the radiator cap?If not it is very common for the cap to leak massively well before the normal pressure rating.

no i dont have a clamp on my coolant bottle.... i dont know whats going on, should i just replace the plastic impeller and stop worrying about it, i dont want to run my quad and cause more problems by having no watter being pumped into it.

Try the clamp and inspect your bottle for cracks.May as well get a aluminum impellar and inspect the bleed hole in the waterpump cover also.
