Ok heres the deal. I went to start my quad and heard the dreaded sterter spin. If i toggled the switch i could get the engine to turn a half revolution or so. So fine figured its the sprague or 1 way bearing. Well upon disassembly i could see the spring was worn and some of the rollers were as well. no biggie got a new one ordered up and after getting everything together im getting the same thing! the starter reduction gear is spinning with the starter but not not engaging the balancer. wtf. I installed the bearing with the arrow in the direction as shown in the online manual but it will only go in the balancer 1 way. looking at it closely 1 side is clearly higher than the other so it will slide into the balancer. I want to know if the starter reduction gear can be bad? Oh and i inspected the balancer shaft for imperfections before i put the new sprague in and it appaeared good, free of waer spots or grooved imperfections. I have a few other yamaha quads so i was workin on this when i felt like it. otherwise might of taken this thing out back and shot it by now.. lol so starter reduction gear or ?

Never heard of it going bad but it could be the starter clutch. Its easy enough to check the one-way. Just remove the starter clutch and use your finger to see if the gear which starter engages only turns one way. Go from there.
