whats the proper way to tighten the front sprocket? leave in gear and tighten against the trans?

I usually just grab the sprocket with a big set of channel lock pliers... the torque by the book is not as high as the size of the nut would indicate.

I always just put it on gear and used an impact.

Guys that nut is aluminum! If you hammer that thing with an impact gun you will break it eventually. There is a lock washer plate behind the nut made to make sure is does not come loose. You do not need much more than finger tight (just a figure of speech, I would tighten with a wrench or socket mildly)) and a new or good condition used lock washer plate to keep it on.

A tip is to use the other side of the plate to bend up fresh metal to lock the nut the second go around.
