crank? timing?

I have an '03 cannibal, which I've about a year now. I did the stage 8 installation about 6 months ago and it's ran perfect ever since. I've done regular oil changes and maintenance. Yesterday, however, while riding wide open the engine made a few strange inside noises, bogged down, and cut off. When I tried to start it, the fuel pump was working and so was the starter, only the starter wouldn't turn over the motor. I got a tow back to my house let it sit and a couple hours later tried starting it. This time it started, however, while it was running it seemed to make a knocking sound and was running horrible. Any ideas? timing? crank?

stage 8, stud update, if these haven't been done, then its probably like thomez said.

Actually Stage 8 or stud update have no bearing on the crank failures. Independant events.
