Answers:
1. They can be updated and even rebuilt into firebreathing monsters....read for a while.
2. So it can produce that wonderful noise. Have you heard one yet?
3. The program that tells the ECU (computer controller) what to do and when to do it.
4. There's many places that can work on these quads. This site is a great source and there is, of course, www.haydugcycles.com

The 'dales are worth the effort required 400excrazy, just go in with your eyes open and :ride:

CannondaleRiders is a database of most every cannon problem.
Also www.cannondaler.com is a great resource.

Sounds to me like we (existing members) need to put something together for intending buyers to read...

Maintenance: regular oil changes (trans and engine) and fastener tightening.

Updates: See the Dale Tech section in the header above. An easy way of spotting 2 of them is to kneel down on the right side of the quad.
#1: If you look between the front engine mounts (behind the battery) you should see a spacer between the mounts. This will support the mounts and prevent them from cracking.
#2: A little harder to explain...Oil hose update.
Looking at the side of the engine, just below the toe end of the rear brake pedal, you should NOT see 2 hoses running toward the top of the engine, if the update has been performed, you would just see 1 hose. I might add that this update is not entirely necessary unless you're experiencing the dreaded "oily ECU" symptoms...

As for finding parts, quite a few companies have stepped-up to the plate and can offer standard (www.atkusa.com) , or aftermarket (www.haydugcycles.com) parts. There's many more companies offering, these are just 2 options...

Working on these quads yourself is rather intimidating at first but once you've dropped your first engine you'll get the hang of it quickly. We're all here to help with questions/directions as well.

also look to see if it has a clutch cable or hydraulic clutch. and look on the bottom right side of the engine by the drain plugs to see if it says "cannondale" above the plugs. might want to remove the front fenders and check if it has the 500 or 1000 ecu.

so a 2002 speed with a hydrauilc clutch is bad? even if it has all updates & has been ridden fairly hard with 45+ hours with still no problems?

No... he was just saying that is something to look for when buying one, if it is hydraulic or not.

The dales with the s1000 ecu have an on off switch and I believe the s500 ecu has a kill button.
