this is the second time in my life to find one of these. Last one was about 6 years ago & less than 100 feet from where I found this one. In my back yard.:wow
It's a Royal Walnut Moth caterpillar, AKA the "Hickory Horned Devil", in the 5th instar, or in other words, just about to pupate. They'll burrow to pupate rather than forming a coccoon on a tree like most caterpillars. put him in a jar with some Walnut leaves and watch him go! The moth can be 6 inches across.
I thought that at first too, but then remembered that the macrobiotic bioconuance prickle menace has mutiple segment division spiracles on the anterior aspect. This specimen clearly shows mainly singular divisions with only slight color variations, consistant with the Royal Walnut Moth. :confused:
