Spun flywheel. Take off the black cover on the right side,it uses 4 Philips screw. Then the nut on the flywheel I think is 17mm take it off, you'll see a keyway that key way should line up with the "C" on the cannondale. If its not lined up you found your problem.

If its a fx400 cable clutch my bet is on a bad flywheel side main bearing. gently pry up and down on the flywheel to see if it has any movement. When the bearing goes it gets an intermittant crank signal from the flywheel wobbling and will just pop, spit and flood the motor. spun flywheel is first to check as well.

Its possible someone took the stator off and either used the wrong spacer or forgot to put it in.That seal is easily changed if its shot.Check to make sure stator update is done also to save trouble in future.

I now have some upgraded versions of that pesky seal.
For a leaky FX400 (later bored-though case only), you would want the Viton 5mm deep, and with a ribbed outer lip -- for the best possible seal.

Yep various parts and Update kits are in stock.
Just call when nearby to your machine, and with the flywheel off. You may already have the second-generation case. If you can SEE the entire surface of the 30mm diameter seal, then cool -- easy fix for the leak anyway, and presuming the mainbearing is good like you say.
