I believe that rear one uses a 12mm deepsocket with knuckle for getting at it at an angle. I dont know what was harder, getting the heat shield back or removing the bolt...
I think it'd be easier getting at it from the top, remove the tank, disconnect the shock at the top and rotate back (support the bike under the foot pegs) and then go to town.
The scotts is a great filter. My main oil filter was paper as well, I got the scotts on the first oil change, I think I picked up 3hp
At anyrate, it's a good investment.

Engine, intake, exhaust, EFI, chain, sprockets, etc.
