The duel alternator isn't that uncommon. Both my boss's 7.3 has it. Its some HD Ambiance package thingy. As for the 6.0, Heads, head gaskets,EGR,injectors and ECM's are very common. I've heard the turbo's last if you let them cool down for a bit. So once you spend 5-6k to update them I hear there good motors. I think Ford learned a hard lesson with the 6.0, I think the 6.4 and 6.7 are doing well and respond well to tuners, I'm hearing 550hp with just a tune but how knows. I'm a ford guy but yeah they like to do things the hard makes no scents way.
I know overall they make a good gas motor, but even then they cant decied,2v,3v,4v bla bla. I think now you can get something like 4 or 5 different motors in there f150?? WHY?? Give me a small motor, and medium size and a monster end of it.

Wistech, The dual alternators don't have anything to do with the year. It was an option.

Does the vacuum pump not run the brake booster or is it hydro?

When the 6.0 came out in 03 there were a lot of cases of people dying in the ambulances due to the engines failing . That triggered the dude from powerstroke .com to do his own updates. He made a lot of money becoming a specialist in just these engines. I think he even bought fleets of these abulances for pennies on the dollar and repowered them.
We lucked out and waited till 05 for the "updated " versions but still were doing the Navistar "Uptime" recalls on the vt365"s which is the Ih version of this engine. Most needed injectors about every 25,000 to 30,000 miles. Of course the turbo vanes siezed on most from sitting all summer of them so they all got at least one turbo and bed plate resealed. . Countless egr coolers. Things seemed to settle down around 2010 and most have been perfoming OK with an occational injector going out.

As far as the dual alternators yes its nothing new but this isnt an ambulatory vehicle nor does it have the aux AC system that needs 200 extra amps. Our purchasing dept just takes whatever comes next off the assembly line.
I completley agree with never ever owning one of these out of a warranty. They are just not worth it in a commuter truck. If its paying the bills and making money its one thing.
We have a few of the 6.4 and the navistar version the maxxforce 7 single and twin turbo. Engine wise they are holding up but are constantly needing forced regens due to them not getting enough hiway time to burn the particulate filter clean. The in cyllinder dosing to get fuel into the catalyst converter has caused them to get fuel in the oil from washdown. New policy is change oil every 3 months or 4000 miles to control dilution levels. Thats a truckload of oil changes.
Last year we had one of our old chevy 6.5 with around 150,000 throw a rod . It only had 2 years of service before retirement so we scrapped it instead of getting a long block. It kind of made me sad because it would have bean relatively cheap and quick to repair that old tech engine compared to what these new ones are going to bleed us. Then at least we would have had a reliable spare while the newer ones are in the shop.

The brake systems are hydro boosted. The last vaccum ones Ive seen went away in 2000. In fact the last 5 years they have gone all electric on the medium duty vehicles with a twin redundancy dual pump high pressure rezzy system . It also has reliabilty issues . This year we also dropped that and retrained our drivers to use air brakes. Now we are buying cummins powered thomas / freghtilners and chevy vans with the duramax engines. Fingers crossed but none have been to the dealer yet. That says a lot.

My 02 7.3 van is vacuum brake boosted. Pump goes out on average every 150K. I loose hvac controls, power brakes and cruise control. Cruise is ecm controlled but soon as the brake light is activated due to low vacuum.....no cruise.

Needless to say, I carry a spare. I can't just stop and buy one when it goes out, as they don't come with the pulley which is a press fit.

back in the 70s I did a couple in frame rebuilds on vans (try that with a newer one). and even pulled a ford 302 out the bottom. I just pulled an engine out of a chevy van for the first time. I think it was a late 90s. we were scraping it and wanted the engine and trans. I was amazed how quick we had the body off engine out and body set back on the frame.

About 10 years ago I rebuilt a 6.2 GM and the owner was thinking about putting a 6.5 in the truck. I did some resurch and it was a lot cheaper to rebuild the 6.2 which already had a banks turbo but a friend of mine was doing his low milage 7.3 which needed a block and I believe he said the bare block was more than the complete 6.5.

I don't do much of this anymore but I used to by crate engines from a dealer in Indiana (I think it was IN.) called Pace maybe Jim Pace. rebuilt engines around here were going for close to what Pace was charging for new and no core problems to deal with

We need this guy to narrate a Cannondale bulletproof video.

It took 15 hours to get the engine out of the chassis. Thats the 73 steps from the manual.LOL You pretty much need to take it half apart to get out but it doesnt seem to be such a big deal as that stuff needed to be removed anyway.

Glad i own a cummins. Basically the same engine from day one and I can do anything necessary minus replacing the block with the engine in. Simple.

Been working on my sons 05 cummins off and on for the past couple weeks and it may be (probably) easyer than the other two but, I haven't found anything simple. in fact the oil filter is one of the worst I've ever done.
