When you could change out a camshaft/lifter in you vehicle in a afternoon. Not anymore . This unhappy owner of a ford diesel had a cam go bad just out of warranty. The cam comes out of the block to the rear so you have to pull the cab off and tranny . You also have to remove the heads as well. You cannot pull the engine through the hood anymore. Im not sure what the procedure is for a van . I think you just junk it.

The mechanics nowadays are so used to pulling bodies off that even for gas tank sending unit they just remove the box on trucks. Supposedly saves time vs dropping tank. Cam out back is a good one though! Glad I got out of that field of work!

You know why they acll them Powerstrokes? Because when you get the repair bills you have a massive stroke. The Ford dealer charges $14000 to do and engine swap when the engine cannot be salvaged.

LMAO!

I have been considering trading my 7.3s for new diesels for years. But both were bought new, both have less than 125k miles, and I know they will run forever. Plus with my early '99 making 440hp and 980tq to the tires, it will still out tow any of the new ones.

629000 miles on my 7.3 and I think it's just getting broken in. lol It's getting close to needing a new van(due to the rust belt)but there is no engine I want in the new stuff. I've entertained the thought of buying a newer van with a blown engine and stuffing my spare 7.3 in it. So far, I'm averaging 18mpg for the year. Good luck getting that with any of the new van engines whether they be gas or diesel.

My ideal van has a 5.9 cummins backed by a 6 speed manual and 3.00:1 gears. tongue.gif
